Kayak Capacity

Kayak Capacity vs Weight

It’s tempting to look for a kayak that has the highest capacity possible (just in case), but generally speaking, the higher the kayak capacity, the heavier the kayak.

If you want a lightweight kayak, but you need a lot of capacity, there are some kayaks that we can add buoyancy to.

I’m talking specifically about the AdvancedFrame Sport Kayak and the AdvancedFrame Kayak – with both of these we can put in a Drop-Stitch Floor.

How Does the Drop-Stitch Floor Increase Capacity?

The standard AdvancedFrame Sport has a kayak capacity of 113kgs.

It comes is with a low-pressure soft floor inside that feels like a lilo. It’s essentially a lovely cushion for your bum.

To increase the capacity of the AdvancedFrame Sport kayak, you can pull out that soft floor and put in the Drop-Stitch Floor instead.

The Drop-Stitch Floor is stitched top to bottom and that means you can inflate it to very high pressure and it will maintain its shape and become rigid.

We generally sell it as a performance enhancer because it improves the rigidity of the kayak but if you think about it, a high pressure floor has a lot more air in it than a low pressure floor. So it does in fact increase the buoyancy of the kayak quite a bit.

What About the Other Kayaks?

The drop-stitch floor is already in the AdvancedFrame Expedition Elite Kayak,  AdvancedFrame Convertible Elite Kayak and StraitEdge Angler Pro Kayak.

As a result, they have very impressive capacities!
