How to Choose a Fishing Kayak
Can you fish from an inflatable kayak?
Yes, you can!
People are often surprised that you can fish from an inflatable kayak, but in fact all of our kayaks are durable enough for kayak fishing, they’ve just not all stable enough.
The kayaks presented here are those that have been designed with kayak fishing in mind.
Serious Fishing
If you are going to be kayak fishing most of the time, check out our StraitEdge line. They are all:
- self-bailing sit-on tops – any water that comes over while you are fishing will drain out through ports,
- very stable,
- extremely durable and
- they all have either rod-holders or rails to attach rod-holders.
StraitEdge Angler Pro Kayak
The StraitEdge Angler Pro Kayak has an accessory frame rail system at the front and back which allows you to attach the Railblaza Starport Rail Mount and any of the Railblaza starport accessories, such as the Rod Holder II.
StraitEdge Angler Pro Kayak
The StraitEdge Angler Pro has been customised for fishing with reinforcements on the side.
It’s also got a high-pressure Drop-Stitch Floor, which allows you to stand up and has made the aluminium folding frame seat possible.
This is a wonderful seat. It’s very supportive and gives your bum some lift.
StraitEdge Angler Pro Kayak
There is an optional deep fin that comes with this kayak that fits into a U.S. Fin Box which is compatible with the Vaquita propeller.
Weight Comparison
At 20.5kg, the StraitEdge Angler Pro kayak might be a bit heavy for some people, in which case the StraitEdge is an excellent lightweight alternative at 15kg and the StraitEdge2 Pro is a great tandem option at 18.6kg.
Occasional Fishing
If you are only going to be kayak fishing occasionally and don’t need rod holders, you have more options, including some of our sit-in kayaks.
Sit-in kayaks allow you to stay warm and dry, and they go faster and straighter than sit-on-top kayaks.
Most of our sit-in kayaks are stable enough and durable enough for fishing.
Rod-Holders
Our sit-in kayaks do not have rod holders, but most have velcro paddle holders on the side that can be useful when fishing.
They also have deep pockets behind the seat – not designed for a fishing rod, but it might work.
If you want to attach rod-holders, you can get the Accessory Frame System.
This system works with any kayak, as long as the width of the deck is at least 59cm.
If the deck of your kayak is fabric, like our AdvancedFrame line, you actually have to cut the holes in the fabric to glue the grommet onto the inner tube.
It’s in the instruction manual and it’s covered by warranty.
Protecting Your Floor
These models: AdvancedFrame Kayak, AdvancedFrame Sport Kayak and AdvancedFrame Convertible Kayak they all come with a lovely softly lilo floor. Feels beautiful under your bum but if you’re going fishing a lot, you may wish to get the Dura-Floor.
The Dura-floor is essentially a mat that goes over the soft floor to protect it.
Protecting Your Floor
Alternatively, you can switch out your soft floor for the Drop-Stitch Floor, which is the high pressure floor.
Not only is this one tough as nails, it also gives you a performance enhancement. So it’s a great option if you want to go a bit faster and a bit straighter.
“I was so impressed with the product that I bought another one for my fiancé. I’m a fisho, and 6’4”. The adjustable seat is great and the drop stitch floor easily allows me to stand and fish. Great portability, just chuck it in the back of the Cruiser and take it anywhere. Very glad I spent the money. Back up service and support has be second to none. The folks at Oz Inflatables will stand by their product, there are no concerns in this department. If you’re thinking of getting a sturdy, responsive, manoeuvrable and portable fishing platform, this is it.“

FAQs
Yes, you can fish from an inflatable kayak, provided it is stable, spacious and durable. Look for thick PVC tarpaulin material and RF welded seams.
You can not drill a rod-holder into an inflatable fishing kayak, but you can use our Accessory Frame System, which is a rail that allows you to attach rod holders, fish-finders, epirbs, action cameras, etc. The Accessory frame system uses PVC grommets that simply glue onto the kayak – no drilling required!
The StraitEdge (solo) and StraitEdge2 Pro (tandem) kayaks both have rod holders included. The StraitEdge Angler Pro (solo) kayak does not have rod holders, it comes with 2 accessory frames that allow you to mount your own rod holders.
