StraitEdge Inflatable Kayak FAQ
Sit-on-top kayaks are typically slower than sit-in kayaks.
The rigidity of the StraitEdge kayak is great compared to other sit-on-top inflatable kayaks on the market, but it’s not as fast as the AdvancedFrame Sport Elite kayak, for example, despite being a similar length and width.
It’s a nice, cruising experience, but not a rocket.
The StraitEdge kayak is a crossover kayak. This means it is designed to do a bit of whitewater (up to class 3) and flat water.
It does not have a fin (so it can pivot in whitewater), but it does have aluminium rib frames in the bow and stern to stop the waggle on flat water.
The tracking on flat water is okay, depending on your weight. If you are very lightweight (say, under 60kg), you might find that these ribs sit above the water and don’t help so much. But if you are a little heavier, you should get good tracking from the StraigtEdge kayak.
If you really want a kayak that tracks straight on flat water, consider our sit-in kayaks.
Yes, it does get a bit wind affected, depending on your weight.
All kayaks are wind affected to some degree.
You can generally predict how wind affected it’s going to be based on the ratio of kayak above the waterline to kayak below the waterline. The StraitEdge kayak sits fairly high in the water, especially if you are lightweight.
In terms of our solo kayaks, the StraitEdge kayak is in the middle – it’s more wind affected than the AdvancedFrame Kayak, but less wind affected than the AirVolution kayak.
The seat (included) clips in high on the side tubes, so it gives you good lower back support.
Watch this video – you need to get the angle right.
The front air bag is designed to be used as a foot brace. A lot of paddles swear by foot support for encouraging good paddling technique and for supporting the lower back.
The StraitEdge kayak seat is not high-backed, but it gives you good lower back support.
Yes!
The Straitedge Kayak has some awesome features that make it ideal for taking dogs.
The sit-on-top style gives you plenty of open space for your dogs, so they are not cramped into a cockpit.
The PVC tarpaulin material on the floor and main chambers give you the confidence that your dog’s claws will not cause a puncture.
The wide flat hull means the kayak is very stable so you won’t all go over board if your dog gets excited and makes a sudden move (not that they ever do that …).
Yes!
The Straitedge Kayak comes with 2 rod holders attached to the front air-bag.
The wide flat hull means the kayak is very stable so you can focus on fishing and relaxing.
The sit-on-top style means you can swing your legs over the side to help reel in a big catch from any angle.
The PVC tarpaulin material is extremely durable, give you the confidence that neither fish nor fishing gear will cause a puncture.
There is plenty of space on board for gear, such as a tackle box, an esky, lunch etc
You can open the ports down the sides to allow the kayak to self bail if you get swamped whilst fishing.
Optional kayak anchor if the fish are biting and you want to stay where you are.
Optional accessory frame if you want to attach additional rod holders, an EPERB, a fish finder, go-pro etc.
You can even put on a propeller – the ePropulsion Vaquita.
Yes, as long as they fit.
It’s super-stable, so the kids can have a nap and muck around without tipping it over.
There’s a good amount of space, most adults would be able to fit a small child in with them.
Yes!
The StraitEdge kayak makes a good tender for a boat.
It’s a sit-on-top kayak, so you don’t have to get yourself in and out of a cockpit.
It’s suitable for almost all water types, including open ocean.
There’s heaps of space for gear if you are using it to transport your stuff to and from shore.
**Caution – do not leave the kayak inflated on the deck of the boat. The heat will cause the pressure to rise and you could damage the kayak.
I would suggest 1 hour to a half-day, but there’s no reason you couldn’t do a multi-day expedition in it.
There is not as much deck space for gear as some of our other kayaks, and the seat is not high-backed, but if you wanted a kayak that could handle some whitewater, it would be great for a multi-day river trip.
Yes.
The StraitEdge kayak is a self-bailing sit-on-top kayak.
This means there are ports in the hull that you can leave closed in calm water, to stay dry, or open up for whitewater or choppy open water.
When the ports are open, water that sloshes over the kayak can drain out, so you can never be swamped.
The StraitEdge kayak is a crossover kayak.
This means it’s good for both flat water and some whitewater – up to class 3.
Yes, but it doesn’t track as straight as some of our other kayaks.
The key feature for beginners is stability and the StraitEdge kayak is so stable, you can sleep in it (but don’t …)
The aluminium rib frames will help you track straight on flat water, but our kayaks with fins are definitely easier to paddle straight.
It’s fairly lightweight and simple to set-up, which are not critical features for beginners, but certainly make the experience easier.
Yes, we sell the StraitEdge kayak to seniors quite often.
In my experience, seniors are looking for a lightweight kayak, and the StraitEdge kayak is not too bad at 15kg.
It’s going to up to you to decide whether that’s a weight you can lift by yourself. For some seniors this will be a doddle and for others, it will be a deal breaker.
The other key features for seniors are stability and ease of getting in and out – the StraitEdge kayak ticks both these boxes.
Yes, it’s possible for a child to paddle the Straitedge kayak, but if this is going to be a regular occurrence, you may be better off getting something lighter.
Yep.
It is a sit-on-top kayak, so there is no cockpit to fold yourself into.
It’s very stable, so you can flop in and roll out if you have to!
Above 6’2″ it’s possible, but hard to say with certainty.
You may need to loosen the seat straps all the way, so you are sitting further back in the kayak for your feet to comfortably reach the front air-bag.
This is not something I have tested with a very tall friend yet, but I have never had a customer return the StraitEdge because it was too short.
The maximum capacity is 136kg / 300lbs.
If you are above 115kg you might struggle to maintain rigidity and I would recommend looking at the StraitEdge Angler Pro kayak, which has a high-pressure, rigid floor.
Advanced Elements have been making inflatable kayaks for well over 20 years – you don’t have to worry about quality.
All kayaks are inflated at the factory and left for 24 hours to ensure there are no slow leaks.
The main material used is called PVC tarpaulin and it is super thick and tough.
The StraitEdge kayak is a sit-on-top kayak, with self-bailing ports.
* note: the StraitEdge2 Pro Kayak is shown in the picture
If the water is calm, you can leave the ports closed and stay dry.
If the conditions are rough or you are doing whitewater, you can open the ports, allowing water that comes over the sides to draining out.
The downsides of sit-on-top kayaks is that they are often slower and more wind affected than sit-in kayaks, and you get wet.
The upsides of sit-on-top kayak is that they have heaps of space, you don’t feel enclosed, they can do a huge variety of water types.
People often think that sit-on-top kayaks are more stable than sit-in kayaks. The truth is that is really depends on the kayaks. All our solo kayaks are equally stable, except for the AirFusion EVO, which is much narrower and less stable.
The StraitEdge kayak is a solo kayak.
Most people could fit a small child or a dog in, but not a second adult.
Deflated and packed dimensions are:
76cm x 43cm x 25cm
You can get the depth (24cm) down a bit by putting the seats somewhere else, but the other dimensions can’t really be altered.
The weight is only 15.4kg, so if you’re trying the keep the weight down with your vehicle, it’s a great option.
At 15.4kg, the StraitEdge Kayak is reasonably lightweight.
Most people can carry it on their own and it doesn’t add a lot of weight to your vehicle.
I can carry it myself down to the water. I am 55kg and 5’4″ if that helps.
The StraitEdge kayak is very stable, but note that the floor is soft (low pressure), so you can’t stand up in it.
No, and the Rudder Kit we sell is NOT compatible with this kayak.
If you'd like to use a propeller, a glue on fin box, performed by a qualified boat repair person, is your best option.
The floor, the hull and the side tubes are PVC tarpaulin – an extremely tough multi-layer material.
There are aluminium ribs in the bow and stern, rubber moulded handles at each end, a mesh pocket and some elastic bungee lacing.
The StraitEdge Kayak is manufacted by Advanced Elements (an American company), in their factory in Indonesia.
All kayaks are inflated and left overnight on the factory floor to ensure they are fully functional before shipping out.
You can also purchase a paddle leash so you don’t lose your paddle!
We also recommend a dry-bag for keeping your gear dry.
Check out our Fishing Gear section if you want to do some kayak fishing.
Any double bladed kayak paddle will work, but I would strongly suggest getting a LONG one, so you can easily get over the side tubes. Ours start at 230cm.
I would strongly suggest you use our Double Action Hand Pump with Gauge – it has exactly the right adapters and is capable of inflating the drop-stitch floor to the maximum pressure.
Yes!
We offer a package deal with a $49 discount, just underneath the Add to Cart button.

Above expectations
These kayaks are simple to set up, sturdy, track straight and very easy to paddle along. I could not be happier with our choice and the great advice given prior to our purchase. I would highly recommend the kayak and the whole purchase experience.

Advancedframe Expedition Elite Kayak
The Advancedframe Expedition Elite Kayak is extremely well thought out and put together. Every aspect seems to have been catered for. My first experience on the water in the Expedition Elite was very memoriable and 6 hours of paddling seemed to pass in the blink of an eye... If storage and transport is a problem for you I would highly recommend the Advanceframe Expedition Elite Kayak and would highly recommend purchasing from oz inflatable kayaks as Emily was wonderful to deal with and was very knowledgeable and answered every question I threw at her and the service was second to none.

Super slick design and a pleasure to use
This kayak is an excellent design and makes kayaking very accessible for a newbie like me; it's beautiful to use on the water - super stable and comfortable to paddle - and easy to inflate once you know the process. It opens up a whole new range of activities for my camping holidays with kids and friends and can be packed into a boot or trailer as a foldable inflatable product... I could also easily fit my 13 yo and 10 yo into the kayak with me and enjoy it as a family...
