How to Choose a Fishing Kayak

Can you fish from an inflatable kayak?

Yes, you can!

People are often surprised that you can fish from an inflatable kayak, but in fact all of our kayaks are durable enough for kayak fishing, they’ve just not all stable enough.

The kayaks presented here are those that have been designed with kayak fishing in mind.

Things to consider

The first feature to keep an eye out for is if the kayak has a drop stitch floor. While not a show-stopper having a drop stich floor will give an incredibly stability and rigidity. Having a stable platform assists with both kayak performance and standing, if sight casting if your thing.

Most fishing kayaks are sit-on-tops too and some have self bailing ports that will allow any water to drain from the kayak on its own accord.

Customisation

Many thing that becuase you cant screw into an inflatable you cant have things like rod holders and fish finders. This is not the case and we stockj a range of products from Railblazer that give adhesive options to allow any number of customisations if you choose.

Comfort is key

All of the fishing kayaks we have in our range contain comfortable seats for long days on the water chasing the next catch.

Can I use a motor?

Yes you can! Some kayaks in the range come with fin boxes underneith that are compatible with fin box motors. This means that you can attach a motor to your kayak instead of the fin giving you the power navigate waterways with ease without needing to paddle the entire time. Ask us about compatibility.

For the Occasional Angler

If you are looking to use your kayak to fish occasionally then you will have more options than the dedicated fishing kayaks in this section. If you are only fishin occasionally you wont need multiple rod holders and other accessories. You will also have the option to choose a sit-in kayak.

Sit-in kayaks allow you to stay warm and dry, and tyhpically they go faster and track straighter than sit-on-top kayaks.

They are still stable enough and durable enough for fishing, just not in the same capacity as a dedicated fishing kayak. If in doubt, reach out to the team for a chat.

  • Rod Options on Sit-Ins

Our sit-in kayaks do not have rod holders, but most have velcro paddle holders on the side that can be useful when fishing.

Sit in kayaks are great for a single rod and a light tackle box. Think occasional angler

  • Accessory Rails

If you want to attach rod-holders and other accessories, you can use the Accessory Frame System. The Accessory Rail System comes as standard with the Angler Pro but can be added to most other kayaks as an extra as the width of the deck is at least 59cm.

  • Rails on Fabric

If you are sold on a sit-in, you can still install the accessory rails. Installation requires a bit of DIY and there is some cutting and gluing involved. Don't worry though, there are detailed instructions and it’s covered by warranty.

Can I mount a rod-holder to an inflatable fishing kayak?

Of course you can't drill a rod-holder into your inflatable fishing kayak, but you can use our Accessory Frame System or Railblaza Adhesive Mounts to deck out your kayak. You can attach things like rod holders, fish-finders, transducers, epirbs, action cameras, etc.

The Accessory frame system uses PVC grommets that simply glue onto the kayak – no drilling required!

Do these inflatable fishing kayaks have rod holders?

Some do. The StraitEdge (solo) and StraitEdge2 Pro (tandem) kayaks both have rod holders included. The StraitEdge Angler Pro (solo) kayak does not have rod holders as standard, it comes with 2 accessory frames that allow you to mount your own rod holders and accessories.
