How to setup the Jaspara Odyssey Solo Inflatable Kayak

Odyssey Solo Setup Guide: Get on the Water Fast

Setting up a high-performance inflatable kayak doesn't have to be complicated. The Jaspara Odyssey Solo is designed for both speed on the water and speed during setup. Unlike traditional hard-shell kayaks that require roof racks and heavy lifting, the Odyssey Solo rolls out of a bag and transforms into a rigid, high-performance vessel in just minutes.

Whether you're a seasoned paddler or new to the world of inflatables, this guide will walk you through the simple process of getting your Odyssey Solo ready for adventure. We'll cover everything from inflation tips to seating adjustments, ensuring you get the best possible performance out of your kayak.

Step 1: Unroll and Prep the Valves

The first step is the easiest: take everything out of the carry bag and unroll the kayak on a flat surface free of sharp objects. Before you even touch the pump, you need to prepare the air valves.

The Odyssey Solo features high-quality valves with a central stem. This stem has two positions:

  • Down (Open): Air flows freely in and out. This is for deflation.
  • Up (Closed/Inflate): Air goes in but doesn't come back out.

To prepare for inflation, push the button on the stem and turn it slightly until it pops up. This puts the valve in the "inflate" position. It’s a small detail, but a crucial one—if you inflate with the valve open, all that air will rush out the moment you disconnect the pump hose!

Step 2: Inflate to 10 PSI

One of the standout features of the Odyssey Solo is its full drop-stitch construction. This means the floor and side chambers are stitched internally from top to bottom, allowing them to hold high pressure and become incredibly rigid.

  • Pressure Setting: All three chambers (floor and two sides) require 10 PSI.
  • Pump Recommendation: While you can use a hand pump, using an electric pump is strongly recommended. This is a large kayak with high-volume chambers, and manually pumping to 10 PSI can be a workout before your workout. An electric pump makes the process effortless.

Because all chambers use the same valve type and require the same pressure, you don't need to switch adapters or worry about over-inflating one section while under-inflating another. Just connect, inflate, and move to the next valve.

Step 3: Install Optional Components

Once the kayak is rigid and taking shape, you can install the optional accessories. While these aren't strictly mandatory for the kayak to float, they significantly enhance your experience.

Foot Pegs

Foot pegs are highly recommended for efficient paddling. They allow you to brace your feet and engage your legs and core, taking the strain off your arms and shoulders. If you prefer a more relaxed paddle or need extra space for a pet or gear, you can simply leave them out.

Splash Guards

You will find splash guards for both the bow (front) and stern (rear). On a calm day, you might be tempted to skip these, but they serve an important purpose. The deck design means water can splash onto the bow or stern and run down into the cockpit. Installing the splash guards acts as a barrier, keeping you and your gear much drier, especially if you encounter boat wakes or choppy water.

Step 4: Seat Installation and Adjustment

Proper seat placement is critical for the performance of the Odyssey Solo. The hull features a unique keel design that works best when engaged properly with the water.

  • Clip in the Front: Start by clipping the front straps of the seat to the D-rings.
  • Shift Your Weight Forward: Tighten these front straps completely. The goal is to position your weight as far forward as possible. This ensures the bow keel cuts into the water, providing that exceptional tracking the Odyssey is known for.
  • Secure the Back: The rear straps are optional for structural support but help keep the seat upright. Loosen them, clip them in, and then adjust them once you are seated comfortably.

Step 5: Final Touches

Before dragging your kayak to the water's edge, make sure to screw the protective caps back onto all air valves. This prevents sand and debris from getting into the mechanism.

Finally, you'll notice the kayak comes with a fin and a fin box. Here's a pro tip: You don't actually need it. The Odyssey Solo's drop-stitch hull and keel design provide amazing tracking on their own. The fin box is primarily included so you can attach an electric propeller motor if you want to add power to your setup. For paddling, feel free to leave the fin in the bag and enjoy one less step in your setup routine.

Why the Odyssey Solo is a Solo Paddler's Dream

The beauty of the Odyssey Solo lies in its combination of convenience and performance. It offers the storage and portability of an inflatable with the rigidity and speed of a hard-shell kayak.

By following this simple setup routine—prep valves, inflate to 10 PSI, and position your seat forward—you unlock a vessel that tracks straight, handles wind beautifully, and offers plenty of stability for you, your gear, and even a furry companion. It’s a sophisticated piece of engineering that respects your time, getting you from the car to the cruising in minutes.
