Kayaking on Saltwater Creek at Monterey Keys QLD

Jacob and I had a wonderful, leisurely paddle on Saltwater Creek at Monterey Keys – on the Gold Coast.

I had my AdvancedFrame Inflatable Kayak, whereas Jacob was in one of the old Adventure kayaks.

The tide had just turned and was heading in, so we went against it to start with so the paddle home would be easy.

As there was no wind, the paddle against the tide was fairly easy.

We cruised along, enjoying the peace and quiet. It’s a 6 knot area, so only 2 boats passed us the whole time we were out there.

The northern side is Hope Island Resort and the southern side has waterfront properties until the Monterey Keys weir and then it’s undeveloped grass (this was in 2014, by 2019 it has well and truly been developed).

There were some interesting birds around (sorry, my ornithology is very limited), and we even saw a couple of kangaroos chillin’ under the trees next to the creek.

It was a very relaxing paddle.

After about 45 minutes or so, we turned back and let the tide take us back to the boat ramp.

Despite the muddy water (it’s deep into esturine mangrove territory), it is a beautifully peaceful area for kayaking, and for those at the northern end of the coast, it’s not too far to go.

Monterey Keys is a waterfront residential suburb of the Gold Coast, in South-East QLD.

Saltwater Creek runs through Helensvale and Monterey Keys, eventually joining Coombabah Creek and then the Coomera River.

If you want to go kayaking on Saltwater Creek at Monterey Keys, here are the details:

We launched from the boat ramp at River Downs Park on Condamine Cres, Helensvale. Hardly anyone goes there, so parking isn’t an issue.

We headed east along Saltwater Creek, past the weir to Monterey Keys and kept going to the second weir before turning around and floating back with the tide.

Saltwater Creek is tidal, but is a couple of hours behind the tide at the Seaway, so check the tide times carefully.

The AdvancedFrame  inflatable kayak was perfect for me because:

  • It is super comfortable with a high-backed seat and a cushy floor – wonderful for relaxing as the tide drifts
  • The AdvancedFrame is medium weight – the 16kg is easy enough for me to handle on my own
  • The AdvancedFrame is wonderful to paddle – the aluminium ribs keep it tracking straight with a beautiful glide
  • It is durable – I don’t have to worry about submerged obstacles in murky creeks like this one!

BUT, it might not be the right kayak for you.

It’s a lot of money down the drain if you get the wrong model, so it’s worth asking for my advice!

About Oz Inflatable Kayaks

Inflatable Kayak Seaworld Lagoon Emily

Hi, my name is Emily and over a decade ago I thought to myself “gee, I would really love to go kayaking … if only I had a big strong butler to help me get a kayak on and off roof racks. Oh, and several thousand dollars for the kayak and the roof racks (not to mention the cost of the butler)”.

To find a way to go paddling without a heavy hard-shell kayak, I started looking into inflatable kayaks. But I did NOT want a pool toy.

The Advanced Elements range of inflatable kayaks really blew me away (excuse the terrible pun).

I realised that the quality was not just about durability, it also meant that the kayaks were comfortable and easy to paddle straight and fast.

It just so happens that I was also looking for a business opportunity at the same time…

Nowadays I specialise (and delight) in selling Advanced Elements inflatables to all kinds of people in Australia.

I know the range so well that I do personalised recommendation videos to help people choose the right kayak.

It’s a no-obligation service that I enjoy doing AND it helps me in the long run because my customers that get a recommendation get the right kayak, first time. They are HAPPY customers!

So if you are even vaguely thinking about kayaking, get in touch or get your FREE personalised kayak recommendation now.
